This Arms-Length Body (ALB) was recently created by the UK Government to protect the rights of a minority group of citizens. After three years, in keeping with good Corporate Governance practice, the ALB’s Governance secretariat sought a specialist to review Board Effectiveness, make recommendations and facilitate development.

Talik was identified as ‘the only one of 46 providers considered’ who had the right combination of expertise, experience and sensitivity to the ‘for-purpose’ nature of the organisation and its Unitary board.

Two coaches, a highly complementary pairing in terms of demography and style, conducted desk research, one to one interviews with the Chair, CEO, all Board members plus key stakeholders, and observed a Board meeting. Feedback was provided to the Chair and CEO, with recommendations for addressing areas of improvement, including via a full-day workshop.

Bringing formal knowledge of Corporate Governance along with deep insight into group dynamics and psychology, the coaches challenged and supported the assembled Board members with relevant input, feedback and developmental process.

A follow-up Final Report captured feedback, recommendations and outputs from the workshop, including commitments to action and behaviour change by Board members. Thanks to the success of the review, the client invited Talik back to conduct follow-up development six months later.
